Thirty two participants battled it out last Saturday in the Retro Bar for the 32nd annual Captains Cup event.  After twelve hours of pool, it was George Smith who would win his second Captains Cup title by defeating four time champion Ryan Carter 5-4 in an epic final.  In the top half of the draw, Smith defeated Aidan Ross and Alan Steven before knocking out his team mate Tam Sutherland 3-1 in the quarter final.  Bobby Gunn, who scored wins over Suzanne Carter, Colin Banks and James Dow, would face Smith in the semis.  Gunn battled all the way to the end but narrowly lost out 4-3 to Smith in an entertaining semi final.  Carter played well to get past Andy Cormack, Stevie Wyllie, and Craig Nicholson which would set up a semi final meeting with defending champion Greg Thomson.  Some outstanding potting from Thomson would see him take a 3-2 lead, but Carter dug deep to come back and win the match 4-3.  Smith and Carter were not missing a shot in the final, with both players in outstanding form.  Two 8 ball clearances helped Carter go 4-3 ahead, and one frame away from clinching his fifth Captains Cup title.  Smith bounced back thanks to some excellent finishing to win the match and the title with a 5-4 scoreline.
