Camps1 player George Smith saw off 26 other players to win his first ever Captains Cup title on Saturday.
The tournament started off with a few surprise exits in the first round.  Defending champion James Riach was knocked out by Sinclair Bay's Jordan Tait, and Camps2 captain Bruce Honeyman was defeated by Mountain Dew player Michael Morriss.  The top half of the draw saw the Blackstairs players dominate.  Stuart Mckenzie, Perry Campbell and Ryan Cook were all impressive in the early stages which saw them all advance to the quarter finals.  Mckenzie defeated queens player Harry Candeland to go through to the semi final where he would meet team mate Perry Campbell who defeated Ryan Cook 2-0.  Mckenzie produced some outstanding pool to defeat Campbell 3-0 and book his place in the final.
Sinclair Bay captain Greg Simpson was in excellent form and defeated two former Captains Cup winners on his way to the semi final.  He beat 4 time winner Ryan Carter and the 2009 winner Colin Banks without dropping a frame.  Blackstairs1 player Tam Sutherland advanced through the opening two rounds thanks to some outstanding potting which included two 8 ball total clearances.  George Smith knocked out Jordan Tait in round 2 and would go on to defeat Sutherland 2-1 in the quarters.  Smith and Simpson were locked in an almighty battle in the semi final but it was Smith who edged out his opponent with a 3-1 win.
Stuart Mckenzie took an early 2-0 lead in the final as he remained on great form, but Smith showed great determination to fight back to 2-2.  Mckenzie produced some exceptional shots in the next frame to take a 3-2 lead, however Smith's good tactical play in the next frame saw him take the match to a deciding frame.  Mckenzie came close to completing a total clearance but narrowly missed his last red.  Smith then proceeded to lay a number of crafty snookers to get himself right back into the frame.  Mckenzie eventually gave away two shots which resulted in Smith clearing the table to win the 2012 Captains Cup Tournament.
