2014/15 Season Gets Underway

The 2014/15 Wick & District Pool League season got underway on Monday night as sixteen teams looked to get their campaign off to a winning start. The big match in divsion one saw last years second and third placed teams (Bayview1 & Crown1) go head to head out in Lybster. Both teams have strengthened their squads significantly over the summer, but it was Bayview1 who hit the ground running as they clinched an impressive 8-4 win. Eight time division one winners Camps2 looked like they would get their season off to a great start as they took a 5-1 lead away to Sinclair Bay. However, the Keiss side would battle their way back into the match and win 5 out of 6 doubles games to clinch a draw in a 4 hour marathon match. Alan Steven and James Ross both won all three of their games to help their Retro1 side beat Commercial 10-2 in their first ever match in division one. Ryan Cook's Blackstairs side scored an impressive 9-3 win over the 2014 summer league champions Camps1. Shane Honeyman and Mark Alexander helped the Camps take an early 2-1 lead, but Blackstairs took control of the tie with Alan Forbes' 8-ball clearance the highlight of the match.
Francis Street Club, Mountain Dew and Bayview2 all recorded wins in division two's opening week. Wins from Kevin Beales, Dale Johnston and Donald Coghill helped Seaforth Club stick with the Francis St Club as the match was tied at 3-3 after the singles. The Francis St Club would win five of the six doubles games to secure an 8-4 win. Bayview2 got their season off to a flying start as they sealed a comfortable 9-3 win away to Crown2. Philip Hilton and Andy Bunn won all of their games to help Mountain Dew to an 8-4 victory over Harpers. A 6-ball clearance by Harry Candeland helped Queens in the early stages of their match against Retro2, but the teams would share the singles as the match was tied at 3-3. Good play from Andrew Coghill and Brian Robertson would see Queens win three of the next four frames to take a 6-4 lead, but the Retro side worked hard to bounce back and earn a draw.
